PDF Missing Bleed: How to Check and Prepare It for Printing

A print-ready PDF isn't just about having the right content: it also needs a safety margin around the final trim size — bleed. If it's missing, the file can look perfectly fine on screen and still come out with unwanted white edges after trimming. Here's how to recognize the problem and what to check before sending a file to print.

What the problem actually is

A print job is physically cut down to its final size after printing, and cutting blades are never perfectly precise to the millimeter. That's why any element meant to reach the edge of the page (a colored background, a full-page image) needs to be drawn slightly larger than the final trim size — that extra margin is called bleed.

A PDF "missing bleed" has its background elements ending exactly at the trim edge, with no extra margin: even a tiny cutting deviation leaves a thin strip of unprinted paper exposed exactly where it shouldn't be.

Why white edges can appear after trimming

Printing happens on a sheet larger than the final size, and trimming comes afterward. If the PDF's background ends exactly at the trim edge instead of extending past it, even a fraction-of-a-millimeter cutting deviation — normal on any cutting machine — exposes a sliver of unprinted paper.

The result is a white (or otherwise uneven) line along one or more sides of the print, often more visible on the sides opposite where the blade entered.

How to check page size, TrimBox and BleedBox

A print-ready PDF contains several overlapping "boxes," not just the visible page: the TrimBox marks the final size after cutting, the BleedBox marks how far the printed content should extend (TrimBox plus bleed), and the MediaBox is the physical size of the PDF sheet.

A correct file has a BleedBox larger than the TrimBox on every side (typically by a few millimeters); a file with no bleed has a BleedBox identical to the TrimBox, or no BleedBox declared at all.

A visual check in Adobe Acrobat Pro

The first check is visual: open All tools > Print Production > Output Preview, enable "Show ArtBox, TrimBox and BleedBox" and check whether the artwork (background, images, solid colors) actually extends past the TrimBox all the way to the BleedBox, or stops exactly at the edge — this makes it possible to check the real content, not just the boxes' numeric values.

A second, complementary check looks at the numeric box values: open All tools > Organize Pages > Set Page Boxes and use "Show All Boxes" to view the file's CropBox, ArtBox, TrimBox and BleedBox. If the TrimBox and BleedBox coincide, the file has no declared bleed.

This panel lets you read the measurements, not change them without knowing for certain the finished size requested by the printer: changing the boxes blindly can alter the declared print size.

Setting or widening the BleedBox only changes the PDF's technical boundary: it doesn't automatically extend images, backgrounds or artwork. A PDF can therefore have a BleedBox formally present with no real graphic bleed — which is why the visual check above remains essential, and can't be replaced by the box check alone.

Adding a BleedBox isn't the same as rebuilding the bleed

It's technically possible to edit a PDF's metadata to declare a BleedBox larger than the TrimBox, without touching the artwork itself. That only fixes the technical value declared in the file, not the real problem: if the background or image doesn't actually extend past the TrimBox, widening the BleedBox still leaves the same white margin exposed at the cut — the file simply "claims" a bleed the artwork doesn't have.

Properly rebuilding the bleed means actually extending the artwork (background, images, solid colors) past the edge of the final trim size.

When bleed can't be generated automatically, safely

Automatically extending content (for example by duplicating or stretching the pixels at the edge) can work on a flat color background or a simple, repeating texture, but becomes risky when the edge is close to: text, logos or precise graphic elements, which would be visibly distorted or duplicated; the main subject of a photo positioned too close to the edge, where an automatic extension can't invent what was beyond the original frame; complex gradients, where a mechanical extension produces visible color discontinuities; precisely aligned elements (grids, tables, columns), where even a small misalignment in the extension becomes obvious.

These cases need a case-by-case evaluation, not an indiscriminate automatic extension.

How much bleed do you need? It depends on your printer

There's no single bleed value that works everywhere: 3mm per side is the most common guideline for commercial paper printing (business cards, brochures, magazines), but it isn't universal. Some print shops ask for 5mm, large-format printing can require different bleed depending on the material and the cutting or application method, and jobs with special finishing (die-cutting, custom shapes) have their own rules.

The correct measurement is always the one specified by the print shop receiving the file, not a fixed value applied regardless.

Common mistakes to avoid

A few recurring mistakes make the problem worse instead of fixing it: resizing the whole page to "create" a margin, which also shifts the TrimBox and changes the declared final size; adding a white border around the file thinking it's the same as bleed (it's the exact opposite: bleed needs to be printed content, not left blank); ignoring background elements on multiple layers or groups, which may not all extend the same way; relying only on the value declared in the PDF's metadata without visually checking whether the artwork actually matches it.

Checklist before sending your file to print

  • Page size (TrimBox) matches the agreed final trim size
  • BleedBox larger than the TrimBox on every side, per the measurement requested by your printer
  • Background, images and solid colors actually extended past the TrimBox, not just declared in the metadata
  • No important element (text, logos, subjects) too close to the trim edge
  • Visual check in Acrobat Pro (Output Preview), not just reading the numeric values
  • Bleed measurement confirmed with your specific printer, not assumed
